What an incredibly long day at the UBC tri!
The start of our wave was 12:40pm, so you spend the entire day either preparing for racing, racing then waiting around for awards. I prefer to race first thing in the morning, then you're not worrying about what you eat and when, and you can't really get anything else done.
So the swim went fine, but I thought like always, that I would swim faster that I actually did. I had put down that I would swim 19:00, and of course that was being generous for myself, but I wanted to make sure that I was placed in the first wave, so then it turns out that I had put down the 3rd fastest predicted time! Eeek! I looked at the guys behind me and was scared that they were going to be super fast. But it turned out fine. The guy behind me, passed me in the first 400m, but then he ran out of gas and I passed him back. So I came out of the water 3rd. BUT, then 2 guys ran by me in the run to Transition (we were supposed to be walking on the pool deck ... right that makes sense, ask people who type A triathletes to walk in a race!!) I swam 20min and change, but the Transition was like 500m away from the pool, and that time was added to your swim.
The the bike went really well. I felt good and strong. It was a 4 loop course, we had a good tail wind going south-bound marine dr, which turned into a crazy headwind on the way back. I came off with 1:08, and with lots of hairpin turns to slow you down to almost 0, I am happy with that. Colin biked 5min faster so that's good for me.
Then the run... oh the run... First 5k was great, I split it in low 20min, I had a lot of leg motion-range due to all my stretching. I did start to feel my IT rub, but not too badly. Then around 6k, my stomach took a turn for the worse. Very bad, good thing we were running beside a regional park, and I ducked into some trails and took a d*mp. Yep, I did, I had to! I think the reason this happened is two-fold: 1) the race was so late that you end up eating more throughout the day beforehand 2) dehydrated, didn't drink enough on the bike, barely half a small bottle. I get so focused I forget to drink!
One more thing to mention about the run - it was almost 1k too long. So my 48min run includes a pit-stop and an extra kilometer.
I ended up winning and got $100 gift certificate to a bikeshop. But we had to wait around to 5:30pm for the awards!
Colin came 2nd overall! I am so happy for him. Good training for Ironman. Good job Colin!

Way to go!! Saw you whiz by on the bike, but had to get going. Would have liked to see more. It was hard to tell when you were starting. Glad to hear that your leg felt good. See you next weekend!
